Pieces of the Promise: a family Easter tradition

I'll have to admit, it's so easy to do Christmas well. With its bright lights, holiday parties, and Advent traditions, Christmas is a month-long celebration. But the truth is, the Savior's birth is only one half of the story. Our hope would not be complete without Easter...without the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. I don't want to amplify one part of Redemption's story and not the other. So, for the past five-or-so years, I've been on a quest to do Easter well... to make it as tradition-filled as Christmas.

On Good Friday, weather permitting, I will meet our homeschool Nature Club at a nearby state park for an Easter-themed nature walk. I have instructed all the participants to bring a clipboard or other hard writing surface and a few colored pencils.

As our family's annual Easter Brunch fast approaches, I have begun gathering ideas and activities to fill this season of celebration with memorable moments of contemplation and thankfulness.

While the celebration of Christ's birth should be a significant fixture in our faith calendar, we must remember that His birth is made significant because of the reason He came. To the best of my ability, I want to mark Easter with the same attention as I give to Christmas. (This is still a work in progress.) I want our family anthem for this life-giving memorial to parallel that of Paul's in Philippians 3:10a.

No-Fuss Easter Brunch

As I've mentioned, on the Saturday before Easter, we invite some of our extended family over for an Easter brunch and a morning filled with Easter-themed family traditions. This is one way we have chosen to extend the celebration of Christ's resurrection and incorporate some spring-themed fun without encroaching upon the reverence of Easter Sunday.

This year was no different...except for the fact, that all of our cherished extended family unexpectedly came down with illness the morning of our planned brunch. So, our table wasn't quite as filled as we had hoped it would be.

This year's brunch activities were a mixture of some treasured family favorites and some new...but INSTANT...classics.

Annual Easter Brunch

Over the last few years, I have been challenged to celebrate Easter with the same gusto as I give to Christmas. Let's be honest, with its seasonal radio carols, booming decorating industry, and multi-million dollar shopping frenzy, it's easy to make Christ's birth into a month-long festival. Even non-Christians throw their own rendition of a birthday palooza each Christmas morning.

But Easter? For whatever reason, Christ's victorious defeat over sin and death tends to be relegated to the purchase of a new spring dress or tie, the placement of an orchid bouquet on the dining room table, and the obligatory hour of annual church attendance.

With Easter fast approaching, I thought I'd take a minute and tell you about one of my FAVORITE Easter season resources.

DIY Resurrection Eggs

Years ago, in an effort to set our hearts in the right direction during our family Easter celebration and to be able to introduce the account of Christ's death, burial, and resurrection to even the youngest of kids, I put together a homemade set of Resurrection Eggs. 

These twelve plastic eggs have graced our brunch table and have passed through the hands of dozens of our friends and family members for nearly two decades. 

Although we open the same eggs and read the same corresponding Scriptures spring after spring, we're always amazed how God uses the simple trinkets found in each egg to paint a very vivid picture of all Jesus sacrificed on our behalf.
