What We're Reading in December

What we're reading in December-take a peek at our bookshelves this month. The Unlikely Homeschool

With the snow coming down by the bucketful, the kids and I have spent much of the day nestled jumbled together with our noses in a few good books.  I wish I could say that I've been as committed to reading for pleasure as everyone else, but with Christmas prep demanding much of my "free" time (Wow, even typing the words "free time" made me chuckle.), my current book of choice has collected a few day's worth of dust.  I started it mid-November, but since I'm only a few chapters in, I'm gonna dub it my "December book."  (Don't be too surprised or disappointed if I also end up dubbing it my "January book" for lack of free time {ahem} to read it.)

But, I digress...

Here's a quick peek at our book baskets for the month of December. (This post contains affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy for full details.)

Read Aloud-Everybody

A Little House Christmas Treasury- In addition to our bucket of wrapped Christmas countdown books, we are also reading a few pages (or a whole chapter) of this delightful collection of Christmas/winter-themed stories from the original Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

What we're reading in December

Jamie-that's me!

50 People Every Christian Should Know- This treasury of short biographical sketches designed to give you a glimpse into the lives of 50 spiritual giants of church history, is very conversational despite its larger-than-life appearance.  WHEN I've been able to pick it up in my rare moments of "pause", I have been inspired by the faith stories of so many well-respected and highly quoted men and women of Christian history.

What we're reading in December

Sweetie Pea-5th grade

77 Zebra- (Mom-assigned reading book.) This is the third book in a series of fictional adventures of arctic missionaries to Alaska.

What we're reading in December

The Story of Doctor Dolittle- (Read-for-pleasure book she chose herself)

What we're reading in December

Super Boy-2nd grade

Billy and the Rebel- Based on the true story of Billy Bayly, a young northern boy who befriended a confederate soldier during the Civil War, this war-themed easy-reader has made for the perfect snowy-day read for my ALL BOY-boy.  This one will obviously only take a few days for him to read.  He has already chosen Christopher Columbus as his follow-up title.

What we're reading in December

Blonde Warrior-1st grade

Charlie the Ranch Dog: Charlie's Snow Day- Although this is not a phonetically-based reader, my son can read most of the words on each page.  His sister or I help him with the rest.  Who doesn't love a series about a cuddly ranch dog?

Now it's your turn?  Whatcha readin'?

  1. I didn't realize that Charlie had a line of stories! We just met Charlie the ranch dog in Charlie and the Christmas Kitty. It is a picture book we picked off the library shelf. I'll have to go searching out his other adventures (especially the readers for my 1st grader). Thanks for sharing, though we never seem to have a shortage of things we'd like to be reading around here, it is fun to see what others are doing and to get more ideas.
