Lessons in Responsibility for My Son

Lessons in Responsibility for Boys-The Unlikely Homeschool

It has always been a goal of ours, as parents of four boys, to train our sons up to be strong, Godly men who will lead their families in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Too often, the Hubs and I see American men acting like boys who have never grown up. Or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, as angry "tough guys" who are too beastly to care for their wives and children with love and tenderness. We pray that with the Lord's help we can steer our boys away from both extremes.

I, myself, long for my boys to follow the Godly example of their dad who, in turn, has followed the Godly example of his. Both are strong men who boldly lead at home, at work, at church, and in the community. Both are men of courageous faith. Men of integrity. Men of character. Men that my boys can look to and walk behind knowing that they are following those who follow after Christ.

In his effort to gently guide his sons into leadership, my husband has begun meeting with our oldest boy once-a-week for a "guy's only" night. During this time, they hunker down in the TV/Sports room, spend a few minutes wrestling and getting sweaty, then crack open a book and learn some good old fashioned Lessons in Responsibility for Boys. This Level 1 guide by Pearables is designed for boys ages 6 and older and covers such topics as care for siblings, guarding your mind, handling money, and even bodily grooming. Each chapter ends with an activity to practice the learned skill.

I have had this book on my "someday" radar for the last few years. But, when my dear friend, the Deputy's Wife, mentioned that she had purchased it and allowed me to flip through it, I knew this was going to be a great resource in training our large brood of boys.

The Hubs has been doing an exceptional job making this a "manly" time of training and investing in his little shadow as they work through the book together. So far, he likes the content and appreciates the clear message in each chapter. Although, he does choose to add and subtract as needed.

I look forward to watching my son grow in his love for God and love for others as he learns to be a responsible young man.
