Welcome!

I'm a wife to my "Mr. Right". A momma of five. A maker of slow food and simple living. A collector of memories, a keeper of books, and a champion for books that make memories. An addict who likes my half-and-half with a splash of coffee. A fractured pot transformed by the One Who makes broken things beautiful. I heart homeschooling, brake for libraries, and am glad you're here with me on the journey! Be sure to subscribe to my monthly newsletter. Color-Coded Supply Bag for Co-op Mornings

Co-op Morning Organization with a color-coded supply bag {The Unlikely Homeschool}

A typical co-op morning for us is a frantic rush to find shoes, clean up from breakfast, find shoes, make sure everyone is wearing clean clothes, find shoes, and gather the needed supplies for that particular co-op morning...oh, and FIND SHOES!

Preschool Homeschool Curriculum 2013-2014

My days are always much more colorful with a preschooler to homeschool.  Preschoolers have a natural curiosity about EVERYTHING and veraciously soak up every little scrap of knowledge they can.

I know that my Greased Lightning, with his bursting enthusiasm for just about everything and everyone, will be more than eager to start DISCOVERING along with his older sibs.

Our Homeschool Schedule 2013-2014

Our Homeschool Schedule 2013-2014 (The Unlikely Homeschool)

I just wrote the very last lesson plan in my school-year planner and I've re-organized my homeschool cupboards.  With only one more day until the 2013-2014 school year begins, I think it's probably time to look over our daily schedule and make some final adjustments. (This post contains affiliate links.)

The only thing is...WE DON'T HAVE A SCHEDULE!  and we probably never will.

Having a rigid, unbending schedule would not afford me the flexibility necessary to teach multiple grade levels AND care for a toddler.  Nor would it allow my children the luxury of exploring an educational "rabbit trail" from time-to-time.

Introducing The Unlikely Homeschool 2013-2014

Hi, y'all!  I'm Jamie.  I'm a BIG CITY SOUTHERN momma livin', lovin', and learnin' in a small "Mayberry-esque" northern town.  In addition to the momma hat, I also wear the TEACHER hat...and the nurse hat, and the referee hat, and the chef hat, and the seamstress hat, and the...well, you get the idea.

Let me introduce you to my crew...

Last year when The Hubs and I made the decision to put our then four-year-old, Blonde Warrior, into kindergarten, we did so with a little trepidation.  He had already learned to read simple one-vowel words and looooooved sitting at the school table each day alongside his older sibs soaking up ANY little morsel of knowledge he possibly could.

Easy Homemade Yogurt

Easy Homemade Yogurt in the crockpot-The Unlikely Homeschool

Last weekend was another Big-Batch-Breakfast cooking day in my kitchen.  By whipping up a handful of breakfast meals in advance, I can ensure that at least SOME of our mornings start out much more smoothly.

One of the recipes that I often pull out on my "Big-Batch" days is the super simple homemade yogurt from the Architect's Wife.  (She has generously agreed to let me share it with y'all!)  This tasty, breakfast staple could not be easier!

Pinterest Flips & Flops: Lemon All Purpose Cleaner- The Unlikely Homeschool

Welcome to Pinterest Flips & Flops!  A new monthly link-up to share successes and failures of Pinterest pins.  I've got a TON of potentially great ideas on my boards just waiting for me to try.  I'm hoping to love many of them.  But chances are, I'll regret a few.

Here's my FLIP and FLOP from the past few weeks...

Our HOME School Places and Spaces 2013

Our HOME School Spaces and Places 2013 The Unlikely Homeschool

Welcome to my HOMEschool.  Emphasis on HOME.  Yes, we use our home to SCHOOL our children.  But, the fact is...it is a home, first and foremost.

While I know some opt to create a homeschool classroom...a room dedicated strictly to homeschooling that mirrors that of a traditional school, the Hubs and I have chosen to invite school into our entire home.  Because, in truth, learning happens where LIFE happens.  Neither LIFE nor LEARNING can be boxed up between four little walls.

A Word About Purchasing Flashcards

I realize that even the mere mention of flashcards can make some homeschool moms cringe, but I also know that they are a crucial part of review time for others. Whatever side of the line you find yourself, I hope these few tips will help you as you attempt to buy the "perfect" cards for your homeschool.

Not all flashcards are created equal. If that's true, then what makes a good flashcard? Well, if you're askin', here's my 2 cents...

My Super Boy is getting sooooooo excited to FINALLY get his chance to play kitchen chemist this year.  In addition to joining all of us for our group subjects such as Bible, history, science, and art, my little scientist will also be busy with the following:
